This historic spring gave Big Spring, Texas its name: for centuries, it was a welcome landmark to explorers, Native Americans, travelers and pioneers. Today, thanks to a nudge to nature by my landscape architect brother Kelly Cook, lush native vegetation and wildlife again surround this precious oasis in dry West Texas.
We first visited this serene spot at sunset-- the distant thunderstorm added to the continuing mystique of water in a semi-arid land, and sound of flowing water welcomed us into the history embedded in this site.
