Casa Grande, Chisos Basin of Big Bend National Park

No matter how majestic the Texas mountains, the vast southwestern sky dominates all below. When the clouds descend beneath the peaks, as on this morning in Big Bend National Park, it's as if the heavens are reminding the high desert that it's never alone. And as I hiked Casa Grande in the Chisos Basin of Big Bend that day, the clouds included me in their embrace.

The prickly pear in the foreground anchors the painting. Hiking this section of land, I was struck by the interplay of vaporous clouds, waving grass and fleshy, thorny cactus. Just like West Texas-- this painting juggles the transience of the weather and the permanence of the land.

LINDY

COOK  SEVERNS

Big Bend Artist

Old Spanish Trail Studio

Big Bend Artist Lindy Cook Severns, a seventh generation Texan,  paints real places in the wild American west, the high desert ranch lands of Far West Texas and Big Bend country.  Lindy's paintings hang in most every state in the USA, and in collections in England, Australia, Germany and Canada.  The pastel landscape artist | oil painter is among 35 artists selected for inclusion in the definitive book TEXAS TRADITIONS, CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS OF THE LONE STAR STATE, Michael Duty and Susan Hallsten McGarry, 2010.

Featured in the national 2016 PBS documentary WESTERN PERSPECTIVE, the southwest landscape painter lives on a working ranch in the Davis Mountains near Ft Davis and Marfa with husband Jim, a stubbornly affectionate rescued terrier and a cranky African Grey parrot who passionately loves art.  Her studio sits across the road from Old Spanish Trail Gallery and Museum, where Lindy is the Artist-In-Residence.
