Bluebonnets unabashedly carpet central Texas and Hill Country each spring. Often, you'll see scarlet spikes of Indian Paintbrush scattered in a mass of bluebonnets. As a child, I believed Native Americans used both the blue and scarlet spikes of Texas wildflowers to paint with. Now, I joyfully use all those different colors of blue and red to share our Texas springtime.
In painting this large pastel, I consciously mirror-imaged the contours of the clouds in sweep of the wildflowers and grasses across the foreground. It's a subtle way of connecting the land to the big Texas sky.
