WHEN THE HEAVENS BURST OPEN

In Far West Texas, rain is always welcome, but especially so in late spring. Parched ranchland grasses seem to be stretching toward the heavens, beseeching the sky to give up moisture to turn them green. On this day, the vast sky between Marfa and Fort Davis held successive layers of isolated showers. Yucca, blooming in the foreground echoed the whites of the clouds against the golden grass.

This pastel skyscape is more heavily underpainted than most-- I applied reds and golds to my paper first, then"washed" them off leaving just a tint of color. I did a second broken layer in violet tones. Only then did I start painting the blue sky and white clouds. The under colors that show through give this painting rich depth and a luminous glow, much like seeing the actual landscape as the sky paints it in color.

    COOK  SEVERNS

    Big Bend Artist

    Old Spanish Trail Studio

Big Bend Artist Lindy Cook Severns, a seventh generation Texan,  paints real places in the wild American west, the high desert ranch lands of Far West Texas and Big Bend country.  Lindy's paintings hang in most every state in the USA, and in collections in England, Australia, Germany and Canada.  The pastel landscape artist | oil painter is among 35 artists selected for inclusion in the definitive book TEXAS TRADITIONS, CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS OF THE LONE STAR STATE, Michael Duty and Susan Hallsten McGarry, 2010.

Featured in the national 2016 PBS documentary WESTERN PERSPECTIVE, the southwest landscape painter lives on a working ranch in the Davis Mountains near Ft Davis and Marfa with husband Jim, a stubbornly affectionate rescued terrier and a cranky African Grey parrot who passionately loves art.  Her studio sits across the road from Old Spanish Trail Gallery and Museum, where Lindy is the Artist-In-Residence.
