CUPS OF SPRINGTIME

The growing season in the high desert is short, the wet season even shorter. Wildflowers must quickly grow, bloom and go to seed. No time to waste! So when I spy a stalk of waving blossoms, I'm especially delighted.

I like to draw wildflowers in colored pencils because they allow me to render detail, life-sized and smaller, while still using rich color. I draw very lightly, then gradually add light layers of color, which I burnish (rub) to produce a complex pattern of different hues. By using several colors to produce just one, I allow your eyes to interact with my drawing by intuitively blending all the colors you see. Much more fun than me telling you what color something is.

LINDY

COOK  SEVERNS

Big Bend Artist

Old Spanish Trail Studio

Big Bend Artist Lindy Cook Severns, a seventh generation Texan,  paints real places in the wild American west, the high desert ranch lands of Far West Texas and Big Bend country.  Lindy's paintings hang in most every state in the USA, and in collections in England, Australia, Germany and Canada.  The pastel landscape artist | oil painter is among 35 artists selected for inclusion in the definitive book TEXAS TRADITIONS, CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS OF THE LONE STAR STATE, Michael Duty and Susan Hallsten McGarry, 2010.

Featured in the national 2016 PBS documentary WESTERN PERSPECTIVE, the southwest landscape painter lives on a working ranch in the Davis Mountains near Ft Davis and Marfa with husband Jim, a stubbornly affectionate rescued terrier and a cranky African Grey parrot who passionately loves art.  Her studio sits across the road from Old Spanish Trail Gallery and Museum, where Lindy is the Artist-In-Residence.
