Ranch country stretches and bends across the mountains of Far West Texas under sky so blue, you find yourself hoping for a few cottony clouds to break the brilliance. On this day, we were driving toward the Rio Grande, heading down-country from Marfa, hoping for wildflowers after recent rains.
Several disinterested longhorns watched us pass. We came upon this small herd of horses trotting through belly-high grass, enroute to who-knows-where. One white horse stood out from the dark herd. Like the cottony clouds on the true blue sky, the white horse added balance to the monotony of long brown legs parting the grass. Did he realize his uniqueness in this herd?
In a tiny painting such as this, I plan my composition carefully to provide you a visual map to follow. I want to either pull you up the fence line toward the horses, or drop you from the clouds right into the herd. Then, you too can run free in this miniature world of waving grass.
