Over eons, the softer rock surrounding this high desert landmark eroded, leaving it spectacularly alone in a ranchland sea of grass. While the geology of this place is fascinating, on this day, it was the dramatic colors of sunrise illuminating a lingering whisper of clouds that took my breath and made me stop. I can't do a painting anywhere near fast enough to capture such transient color, so I snapped several photos with my phone camera before continuing on my journey from Fort Davis to Alpine. It was a lovely way to begin this autumn day.

This richly colored soft pastel painting brings the magic of the high desert to your wall in an elegant wood frame that echoes the texture of the grass and solitary mountain.

LINDY

COOK  SEVERNS

Big Bend Artist

Old Spanish Trail Studio

Big Bend Artist Lindy Cook Severns, a seventh generation Texan,  paints real places in the wild American west, the high desert ranch lands of Far West Texas and Big Bend country.  Lindy's paintings hang in most every state in the USA, and in collections in England, Australia, Germany and Canada.  The pastel landscape artist | oil painter is among 35 artists selected for inclusion in the definitive book TEXAS TRADITIONS, CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS OF THE LONE STAR STATE, Michael Duty and Susan Hallsten McGarry, 2010.

Featured in the national 2016 PBS documentary WESTERN PERSPECTIVE, the southwest landscape painter lives on a working ranch in the Davis Mountains near Ft Davis and Marfa with husband Jim, a stubbornly affectionate rescued terrier and a cranky African Grey parrot who passionately loves art.  Her studio sits across the road from Old Spanish Trail Gallery and Museum, where Lindy is the Artist-In-Residence.
