WILDLIFE ART | ANIMALS | FIGURES | LINDY COOK SEVERNS
Texas Artist Lindy Cook Severns grew up drawing animals. The young artist spent hours sprawled on the floor, studying photos in magazines and encyclopedias as references for her colored pencil drawings. These days, the models for Lindy Cook Severns art are her neighbors: West Texas wildlife and intriguing critters of all kinds.
A purist when it comes to drawing animals and figures, Lindy uses her own photographs or works from life. She draws without using a grid or projecting and tracing the images.
"If accurate anatomy is an artist's ultimate goal, projecting or tracing a photo is a very useful tool.. But it's a tool I don't use. When I draw, I'm creating a magical connection linking eyes, hands and brain. While I try to recreate what I see as accurately as possible, it's the journey, capturing the emotional energy of a subject through the process of drawing that matters most to me."
Big Bend artist Lindy Severns's critter drawings are generally done as vignettes, elegantly rendered in colored pencil, watercolor, graphite or pen and ink on a clean, undeveloped background.
The creatures she paints in oils, soft pastels or watercolors are wildlife portraits and animals as they appear in nature, part of the landscape of the Texas artist.
