Adobe ruins and fog on the Chisos Mountains invoke a sense of mystery in this panoramic miniature landscape painting.

Each year, these adobe ruins outside Study Butte and Terlingua melt farther into the soil they sprang from. On this crisp winter morning, as fog crept through the distant Chisos Mountains of Big Bend National Park, I wondered who else had stood where I stood, enjoying fog floating across the Chihuahuan desert.

Mystery from these crumbling adobe walls seems to echo back and forth to the chaotic tumble of boulders that stands above them at the edge of the desert beneath the Chisos. That mystery, that sense of not quite knowing is what I felt as I stood there that morning.

I used the long, narrow format for my canvas to show the vast landscape. I chose pastels to give this painting the rich colors of the earth.

LINDY

COOK  SEVERNS

Big Bend Artist

Old Spanish Trail Studio

Big Bend Artist Lindy Cook Severns, a seventh generation Texan,  paints real places in the wild American west, the high desert ranch lands of Far West Texas and Big Bend country.  Lindy's paintings hang in most every state in the USA, and in collections in England, Australia, Germany and Canada.  The pastel landscape artist | oil painter is among 35 artists selected for inclusion in the definitive book TEXAS TRADITIONS, CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS OF THE LONE STAR STATE, Michael Duty and Susan Hallsten McGarry, 2010.

Featured in the national 2016 PBS documentary WESTERN PERSPECTIVE, the southwest landscape painter lives on a working ranch in the Davis Mountains near Ft Davis and Marfa with husband Jim, a stubbornly affectionate rescued terrier and a cranky African Grey parrot who passionately loves art.  Her studio sits across the road from Old Spanish Trail Gallery and Museum, where Lindy is the Artist-In-Residence.
